On Monday 24th April 2017 cast and crew members involved in the creation of the Choices for Life educational DVD resource “Up to You” joined together with parents and invited guests for a private screening of the film at the Harbour Arts Centre, Irvine.
The event, hosted by the North Ayrshire Alcohol and Drugs Partnership, was a big thank you to all who had been involved in the creation of the resource.
“Choices for Life” is a Police Scotland initiative aimed at raising awareness amongst young people aged 11-18, about the dangers of alcohol, drugs and smoking in addition to providing information on online safety and advice on how to deal with negative peer pressure.
“Up to you” was created through the joint work of partners including Police Scotland, North Ayrshire Alcohol and Drug Partnership, Funky Films Group and North Ayrshire Council Youth Services.
Throughout February twenty five young actors from across Ayrshire volunteered their own time at nights and weekends to take part in the short film which focuses on the stories of characters Declan, Kayleigh and Ryan. The key message delivered throughout is that ‘choices are not always easy but they are always yours.
The resource was officially launched on Thursday 16th March at Ardeer Community Centre, Stevenston to schools pupils from across North Ayrshire. Thereafter it was shown to school pupils from South Ayrshire at an event within Prestwick Academy. The final event was held at the Park hotel, Kilmarnock for school pupils from East Ayrshire. The DVD will now be shown within secondary schools throughout Ayrshire to ensure a preventative message is delivered on the topics of alcohol, drugs and knife crime.
Yesterday’s event saw all the young actors thanked for their commitment and dedication during the project. Pictured is Area Commander for North Ayrshire, Chief Inspector Brian Shaw presenting all involved with a certificate of recognition for their efforts in the creation of this resource. Chief Inspector Brian Shaw, Area Commander for North Ayrshire, commented “The continued use of this resource will help in ensuring that young people throughout Ayrshire are made aware of the consequences involved with alcohol, drugs and knife crime. “Up to You” strongly highlights the impact that negative peer pressure can have on young people when making decisions. I would like to thank everyone involved in the creation of this resource and I am sure that its continued use will have a positive impact on young people across Ayrshire.”
Mark Gallagher, Lead Officer for the North Ayrshire Alcohol and Drugs Partnership, commented “The creation of ‘Up to You’ is down to the commitment and hard work of both the Funky Films Group and all the young actors involved.
“This event was our way of saying thank you to all who have committed their time and efforts throughout the project. The education DVD resource is something we are extremely proud of and look forward to it being used by those who are working with young people in our communities.”
