The Ayrshire Shoreline Management Plan (SMP) has been completed by North and South Ayrshire Councils. It was adopted by North Ayrshire Council on the 4 September 2018 and South Ayrshire Council on 18 September 2018.

The Ayrshire SMP extends from Skelmorlie to the Galloway Burn, on the north-east edge of Loch Ryan. The islands of Arran and Great Cumbrae are included.

This is a large-scale assessment of the risks associated with coastal tides and will help to inform the future management of these risks to land and people by delivering an action plan which prompts land use and policy changes and recommends further studies to allow physical protective measures to take place in the future.
